Victor Pasmore was a self-taught painter and sculptor. He was initially a representational painter of landscapes, still life and figures but later turned to Cubism. In the late 1940's he developed a friendship with Ben Nicholson and gradually developed and individual abstract painting style. Numerous exhibitions of his work include: in 1954 a solo-exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, in 1965 a retrospective at the Tate Gallery, London. Victor Pasmore is regarded as the pioneer of abstract art in Britain. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1983.
